Over the past 40 years, London and Theatre has grown into
a deluxe tour in every respect. The group stays at the luxury-rated
and newly remodeled boutique Athenaeum Hotel and Apartments
on Park Lane in Piccadilly, across the way from lush Green
Park. Amenities included are full English breakfast daily
(with surprise guest speakers scheduled throughout the itinerary),
many meals and private coach transportation to all venues.
The trip will be in the capable and talented hands of Gordon
Davidson. Gordon led the Mark Taper Forum throughout its first
38 seasons, guiding over 300 productions to its stage and
winning countless awards for himself and the theatre –
including the Tony Award for theatrical excellence, Margo
Jones Award, The Governor’s Award for the Arts, and
a Guggenheim fellowship. The Kentucky Cycle and Angels
in America (Part One) won the Pulitzer in consecutive
years and, in 1994, three of the four plays nominated for
the Tony Award for Best Play were from the Taper (Angels
in America won). In 1989 Gordon took over the Ahmanson
and, in 2004, he produced the inaugural season in the Kirk
Douglas Theatre in Culver City. Co-hosting our trip will be
the delightful Judi Davidson, the founder of Davidson and
Choy, one of the most successful public relations agencies
in Southern California.
Unlike any other theatre tour of London, this trip will give
you the opportunity to meet and personally discuss theatre
with Gordon and several of Gordon’s colleagues and personal
friends. Past trips included exclusive "Breakfast
with…" chats with Christopher Hampton
(Oscar nominated Playwright for Atonement), John Lahr
(New Yorker critic and author of theatre in London
and New York), Matt Wolf (theatre critic
for the Herald Tribune and Bloomberg.com), Mark Dornford-May
(Director and Adapter of the South African adaptation of The
Magic Flute – a play included last year); and Humphrey
Burton (who discussed Mozart and how The Magic
Flute came to be written).
If that was not enough, the group also had a private, post-theatre
discussion group with Matthew Bourne and some
of the company of Matthew’s Nutcracker. The
group even met Sir Ian McKellen after watching
his performance in The Seagull. The group has also
met with Mandy Patinkin after seeing his one-person show. One of the greatest highlights was meeting with
the award-winning Cameron Mackintosh after
seeing his production of Edward Scissorhands.
The trip in January promises to be full of many special guests
and exciting performances. Due to the nature of our trip,
the group size is very limited. Early reservations are strongly
encouraged to guarantee confirmation on the tour.
