American expects to cancel another 900 flights today
The airline canceled more than 1,000 flights Wednesday as it inspected its fleet of MD-80 jetliners. American Executive Vice President of Marketing Dan Garton said the carrier is working to return operations to normal. "This is a very large task, but we're working hard to accomplish that, and then also to ensure that this doesn't happen again," Garton said.

A return to normal operations depends on how quickly mechanics can inspect and fix the wire bundles. Airline spokesman Tim Wagner said late Wednesday afternoon that 60 planes had been cleared to fly, 119 were being worked on, and 121 planes had not yet been inspected.

American will re-accommodate customers on other American flights or on flights operated by airlines in the same market.

Midwest Airlines cancels flights to re-inspect MD-80 aircraft
MILWAUKEE (AP) _ Midwest Airlines has grounded 13 of its airplanes to re-inspect a wiring harness that caused American Airlines to cancel more than 2,400 flights since Tuesday

Midwest Airlines voluntarily canceled all of its flights involving the Boeing MD-80 aircraft to make sure the wiring component is in compliance with a recent Federal Aviation Administration directive.

FAA inspectors have been conducting stepped-up surveys of airline compliance with safety rules this week. Midwest spokesman Mike Brophy says the airline's MD-80s inspected by the FAA were cleared to fly, but Midwest executives decided all 13 planes should be re-inspected by the airline's own personnel. Brophy says mechanics worked overnight Wednesday to re-inspect the planes.

At least 10 Midwest flights were canceled by Thursday morning. Brophy says Midwest is optimistic that MD-80 flights might resume late Thursday
